Opelika Announces Construction of New Police HQ and Municipal Court Building

Opelika is undergoing major investments and improvements in their public buildings. In May of this year the Opelika Fire Department moved into their state of the art new headquarters and the city council has approved an $18 million proposal for a new police headquarters and municipal court building.

The Opelika City Council released a 3-D architectural rendering of the new Opelika Police Station and Municipal Court during their July 9 council meeting. The 3-D model presents a new and modern 37,000 sq ft facility with an enhanced parking lot. Construction on the multi-million dollar project will be led by Richard Nelson of Robins & Morton, a construction and engineering company whose corporate office is located in Birmingham. The old Brown Center building will serve as a temporary court facility while construction is underway on the current police station. The project is expected to begin in a few weeks and take up to 18 months to complete.

The new headquarters and court will also include a freestanding facility for the department’s K9 unit.

Unlike the new fire station, the OPD will remain in its current location on 10th Street. Opelika’s population growth and the department’s growth have the 1967 building they occupy now busting at the seams. Other projects Opelika has completed in recent years is the opening of a brand new sports and recreation facility near Opelika High School and Southern Union and the Opelika Power Services hub on Fox Run Parkway. These buildings are signs that Opelika’s population is growing and the demand for facilities and services are increasing and the city is stepping up.
